Join us at the Patriots Point Cold War Submarine Memorial for Tolling of the Bell
The Tolling of the Bells is a solemn U.S. Navy tradition honoring submarines lost at sea and their crews, with each bell toll representing a submarine and its sailors. The Tolling of the Bells, also known as the “Tolling for the Boats,” is a ceremonial tradition in the U.S. Submarine Force that commemorates submariners who were lost in the line of duty. The ceremony serves as a tribute to the courage and sacrifice of those who served aboard submarines, many of whom perished with their vessels, leaving the ocean as their unmarked grave.
After, the ceremony, take the opportunity to tour the Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum (separate reservation required) and then end your afternoon by taking the Charleston Harbor Tour at 3pm (Separate reservation required).
